A private commission
A 1.26-carat Umba Valley sapphire, cut as a Maya Drop — lavender going to deep purple, with a little blue in the shade. Set in platinum, on a vine-carved Alice band, with a handful of diamonds at the shoulders.
Corundum at heart: aluminium and oxygen. The purple is likely a little iron and titanium for the blue, chromium for the rose, vanadium sometimes in the mix. Drawn, cast, set, and finished for her.

The country
The ring was given in the Highlands, on a road in the mist, under a sky that never quite decides. Chisolm is a Scottish name. They have been walking toward this country for years — glen water, castle walks, weather taken as it comes.
Winton Castle will hold the wedding. East Lothian stone, three days, and the people they love.
Before you fly
A valid passport is required to enter the United Kingdom. If you are not a British or Irish citizen, you will almost certainly need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation — an ETA — before you board. It is not a visa, but airlines will not let you fly without it.
Apply at gov.uk/eta with the same passport you will travel on, and allow a few days. Winton Castle sits in East Lothian, a short way from Edinburgh.
